These beautiful beads were made by Krobo Ghana artisans sometime in the mid 1900s. These are a medley of sand casted glass beads in mixed sizes and colors. Some new Ghana glass, Miraflori and chevron beads are also mixed in these strands. The sand casted beads are made by grinding down recycled glass bottles into a fine powder and pouring into a clay mold that is heated until the powdered glass fuse together without completely melting, making a rustic sand-like texture. A cassava steam is used for the bead hole and is burned off in the heating process. And each bead is unique and slightly irregular. This process of making these glass beads is an ancient method dating back to over 1000 years ago and it is still used today.
